Queen Charlotte

Queen Charlotte’s reign has come to an end. It’s not often I get to write a Netflix “dethroned” article for literal queen, but here we are. The Bridgerton prequel miniseries has finally been unseated by a new series, another spin-off of another Netflix success.

The new series in Netflix’s #1 spot in the Top 10 list is XO, Kitty. It’s an interesting project, a TV spin-off of a Netflix series of movies, To All The Boys I Loved Before, which stars Lana Condor. There are three of those, which aired from 2018 to 2021, and currently there do not appear to be plans for a fourth film. Lana Condor has five other projects in the work, so she seems to be moving on, for now.

So, picking up the reigns is Lara (Lana) Jean’s little sister in the films, Kitty, played by Anna Cathcart. The new series is 10, 30 minute episodes, which at 5 hours, means it’s almost as long as the three To All The Boys movies put together. XO, Kitty did not debut at #1, I think I saw it much lower in the list to start, but it seems to have caught on. The show is reviewing better with critics than audiences, 80% versus 61%, but there just aren’t that many reviews in overall. Still, it’s doing well. It’s not pitched as a miniseries, so it’s likely it will attempt to return for a season 2.

The rest of the Top 10 list is now…interesting. A Connor McGregor documentary, McGregor Forever, is now #3. The very old movie SWAT is #4. Firefly Lane, which has now wrapped its last season is #5 after previously being #1. The Night Agent is hanging on inside the Top 10 still, the Bridgerton surged because of the popularity of Queen Charlotte, and is #10. Netflix has begun announced a fresh slate of renewals and cancellations. Ginny and Georgia got picked up for two more seasons after we heard nothing after season 2 all the way back in January. Unsurprisingly, Lockwood & Co, the YA supernatural drama, was cancelled after one season.

Given the popularity of the To All The Boys movies, I bet XO, Kitty stays on top for a bit. Though Queen Charlotte was so popular, I bet it could reclaim the top spot if people move on from Kitty early. We’ll have to wait and see.
